Job Description

The context:

Across the developing world, more children than ever are in school but they are not learning. A recent study estimated that less than 1% of school children in Sub-Saharan Africa attend a school where the teaching meets basic standards of quality. At Rising Academies, we’re changing that, and we want your help. Our mission is to create the best schools and the most powerful teaching and learning tools for the people that need it most. We’re one of the fastest-growing quality-focused education companies in Africa, and a Certified B Corp.

About us:

We own and operate our own great value private schools, partner with governments to improve the quality of public school systems, and use our content and technology to help other education providers. Founded in Sierra Leone in 2014, we provided emergency education to children kept out of school by the Ebola Epidemic before opening our first school in April 2015. Today, we serve more than 250,000 students across more than 900 schools in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana and now Rwanda.

Through great curriculum, intensive teacher coaching and actionable data, we help teachers and school leaders bring quality to every classroom. And we get results: independent studies show Rising students make more than twice the progress of their peers in comparable schools.

About the role:

We are looking for an experienced curriculum designer to join our Academics team at Rising Academies. The Primary English Curriculum Lead will lead on updating our English Primary Curriculum across the schools that we work in to ensure all students leave Primary school with strong foundational literacy skills. The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge of what an outstanding English Curriculum should look like for students at primary level and, working in the context of the countries we operate in, will develop a curriculum that drives towards speaking, listening, reading, and writing outcomes for students across the network.

The Primary Math Curriculum Lead will:

  • Execute Rising’s curriculum strategy in line with achieving our organisational mission.
  • Develop the vision for our English Curriculum at primary level for Rising Academy Network.
  • Design a six year, knowledge-rich curriculum map for English at primary level that results in consistent, high quality, and relevant lessons for our school partners.
  • Create effective assessments that track progress against suitable curriculum benchmarks.
  • Ensure the curriculum map is aligned with relevant national standards.
  • Manage a team of English Curriculum writers to develop detailed lesson guides.
  • Ensure the quality of math content developed across the curriculum is the applicable level for each grade.
  • Ensure that Rising’s commitment to safeguarding is reflected in our curriculum.

Location and reporting:

This is a full-time position. There is a preference for the role to be based in one of our operating countries, however it could also be a remote position. This role will report to Rising's Head of Curriculum.

Application deadline:

The anticipated start date for this role is January 2024. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We encourage interested candidates to apply as soon as possible.
