Background
Search for Common Ground (Search) proposes to support a rapid-response 3-month action that seeks to support an effective, conflict-sensitive response to the COVID-19 pandemic in a way that prevents further deterioration of social cohesion in Nigeria through small initiatives.The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has revealed the fragility of Nigeria’s health and governance system. The global oil crisis and the price fluctuation resulted in a severe negative effect on the Nigerian economy which brought additional complexities to the context.
About the Project Search for Common Ground (Search) in partnership with the European Union for the past seven months have been implementing a 15 Months rapid-response Working together against Corona campaign that supports an effective, conflict-sensitive response to the COVID-19 pandemic in a way that prevents further deterioration of social cohesion in fragile contexts in Africa, namely in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Nigeria.
This action has a two-fold purpose: on the one hand, it aims to render the response to the pandemic in the targeted countries more effective by ensuring citizen acceptance of the response through access to reliable information on the other, it will mitigate the negative impact of the crisis on social cohesion and prevent it from exacerbating existing conflict dynamics Covid19 prevention.
About the Funding
This funding is to improve community access to trustworthy and verified information about the virus and its impact through the use of traditional and new media, grassroots communication and community engagement activities. The small initiatives will be complementary to the COVID-19 programmatic activities that the Nigerian team is currently implementing and will address concrete needs in the COVID-19 Context, new challenges that emerged in the past months related to COVID-19 or its longer-term impacts.

Thematic Priorities
  • Small initiatives will be directly funded by the Nigerian Country office to support local/community-based initiatives that:
1. Contribute to preventing the spread of COVID-19 misinformation and disinformation2. Encourage collaboration among individuals and groups across dividing lines and identify opportunities that exist to foster peace.3. Promote social cohesion during pandemic times.List of Possible Activities
  • Arts-based competitions (music, Spoken word, graffiti murals, etc.) for local youth to generate powerful imagery and messages able to contribute to preventing the spread of COVID-19.
  • Community Engagements that encourage collaboration among individuals and groups across dividing lines e.g. Town Hall Meetings and Community Theater.
  • Videos and Animations that tell the COVID-19 story and dispel Misinformation
  • Radio talk shows/Drama, Short Documentary film, Jingles/Spot Messages
  • Webinars
  • Social cohesion sporting activities (traditional dance, cultural activities etc.)
  • Development of a manual or a book for teaching in schools about covid-19
Selection criteria: Successful project proposals will fulfill the following requirements;
  • Implementation and networking capacities of the applicant: Priority will be given to applicants who have the required capacities at the technical level, as well as the networking capacities, to implement projects on the ground;
  • Priority consideration will be given to proposals that entail collaboration across dividing lines of conflicts;
  • Impact of the project: Number of people reached or impacted by the project;
  • Clarity, feasibility and practicality of the application (regarding its objectives and deliverables);
  • Sustainability, replicability amp; scalability of the project will be of high priority.
  • Gender sensitivity and inclusion: Priority will be given to applications that equally target men and women as well as other marginalized groups as beneficiaries or target groups.
  • And any other activities that are in compliance with the COVID19 safety guidelines
Budget
  • Small Initiatives: Between 2000 to 5000 Euros
  • Medium Initiative: Between 5000 to 7000 Euros
  • Large Initiative: Between 7000 to 10,000 Euros
